Why Runtut? To answer that, we first need to look at what Runtut actually is.
Hello, I'm Devin. I have been building Runtut over the past few months, and today, as this blog goes live, it means you can finally try it yourself.
So, what is Runtut?
Runtut is a financial journal. I created it to accommodate my own personal need for financial record-keeping. Why a "journal"? Because Runtut is designed to be used daily, following a logical flow. While the current version is just the beginning, the experience is built to feel like a continuous narrative of your spending.
I’ve personally used Runtut for months before this public launch. While it may currently lack some features others might expect, it is a tool I use every single day. As my needs grow, Runtut will grow with them through regular updates.
The Backstory
If you look at our logo, the paper shape forming the letter 'R' represents a journal bookmark. The philosophy is simple: Write, forget, and reflect. Runtut is meant to be a simple app where you can quickly log a transaction and move on. You only return when you need to check your status at the end of the month or when you're contemplating a big purchase and need to reflect on your financial health.
The real utility for me comes from separating pockets. I often buy food for my family using one payment method, which used to require manual calculations every single time. With Runtut, I can create separate categories and "pockets" to differentiate these expenses instantly.
The Power of Reporting
The Report feature allows you to see the final tally of your records. My personal billing cycle runs from the 27th to the 27th, so I built the reports to be flexible. You can also share these detailed reports so others can see the exact same financial perspective you have. I’ll do a deep dive into these features in the next blog post!
But Why Runtut?
I know there are countless financial trackers out there. However, Runtut has been living in my mind since my college days. It was the theme I chose for my Android development class back then. I didn't have the skills to build it properly then, but I never stopped thinking about it.
Now is the right time. With enough professional experience and a challenging job market, I realized I needed to build something that provides real value (and potential revenue) while serving as a high-quality portfolio of my work. Thus, Runtut was born.
The Business Model
I’ve decided to include a Premium Tier for Runtut for a few key reasons:
- Accessibility: To make the app accessible from anywhere, I need to maintain servers and databases.
- Sustainability: While I could make it a one-time purchase offline app, a small subscription allows me to keep improving the service.
- Fair Pricing: At approximately $2, I hope the price feels reasonable.
The Premium tier is optional—Runtut still operates offline for basic use—but choosing Premium is a great way to support my work. This isn't just a "vibe-coded" weekend project; I am building Runtut following industry best practices, using AI as a collaborator while ensuring every architectural decision is intentional.
What’s Next?
This is just the beginning of the journey for Runtut and its users. I am very open to your ideas! If you have suggestions, please share them via GitHub. Whether it's an issue or a discussion, I’ll be there to reply.
I will share a detailed timeline of upcoming features in the next post.
Runtut: Your Financial Journal
I hope Runtut helps you find "the sequential" in your finances through the art of journaling. If you encounter any bugs, I apologize in advance—report them, and I’ll fix them right away.
Cheers!
